The insurance claim process can be confusing for homeowners, during what is already a stressful time in the aftermath of storm damage. In this blog, the roofing contractors at Vertex Roofing Contractors Inc. share a quick guide on how to navigate the insurance claim process after a storm.
Right After the Storm
Once the bad weather clears, resist the urge to clean up. Instead, go outside and document the damage. If you have to move things—perhaps debris is blocking the entrance to your home—take photos and videos of the damage before you do. Make an inventory of all the damaged items, and, if possible, set it aside in a container for later inspection. During this time, you should call your insurance provider and schedule an appointment with an insurance adjuster, as well as your roofing contractor.
Your roofing contractor will perform temporary roof repair such as tarping if the damage is so severe that it renders the roof unusable. This will also help mitigate further damage to your roof. If the insurance adjuster isn’t present at the moment, your roofing contractor may provide a phone number for the insurance representative.
Starting Your Claim
Your insurance adjuster will review specifics about your insurance coverage. Generally, they will need copies of the documentation you’ve made, but will also investigate the damage independently. They may also ask your roofing contractor for a quote of the repair costs. Your insurance adjuster may also ask you to go through each room in the house to document the extent of your damaged property. If your vehicle was damaged by the storm, you will need to file a separate claim with your auto insurance provider.
Your insurance provider will then determine your settlement and provide an expected completion date. You may receive more than one check to cover roof repairs. Usually, the first check will be an emergency advance, which may cover the down payment for roof repairs. Another check will cover some of the remaining repair costs—note that this will not include deductibles. Set your expectations that you may still have to pay out-of-pocket to make up the difference.
